On 26 June, 1987, Moeru!! Puro Yakyu (Burn!! Pro Baseball!!) hit the Japanese gaming market and one year later came to North America as Bases Loaded. It was a revolutionary game at the time with new features such as a television camera viewpoint, the ability to make batters charge the mound, and a world in which Hawaii was given a major league team.
Now it’s back and possibly better than ever with a new Bases Loaded title announced for the PlayStation 4 in winter of 2015. However, despite the leap from the NES to PS4 technology, it appears that they intend to keep as much of the original game’s character intact as possible, and and means we may once again be able to hit home runs by bunting.
In one of the more notorious glitches of early sports games, by careful positioning of the bat it was possible to bunt one out of the park.
This feature seemed to have been removed for the North American release, but in Japan it helped the game to achieve the rank of “Densetsu no Kusoge” (Legendary Shit Game): a title which should be pretty self-explanatory.
Mebius and Clarice Games, who now control the rights to Bases Loaded, say that the upcoming remake will have the same “legendary tricks” but did not specifically mention the home run bunt. However, in a version of a game released for au smartphones last May, the bunt trick was fully intact.
The PS4 version will also maintain the raster image graphics of the overall series. It will be interesting to see how this turns out. If they can present the 8-bit or 16-bit color palette but with a smoothly realistic frame-rate then it could result in a pretty cool retro effect.
We will have to wait and see as more information trickles out. Meanwhile you can stare at the static image that is the Moeru!! Puro Yakyu website and remember a simpler time when controllers only had two buttons and you had to blow on your games to make them work.
