The other day I was strolling along the street watching a never-ending loop of a manatee swimming into a glass wall again and again on my smartphone when I suddenly bumped into another pedestrian.
It seems this inconsiderate jerk was far too immersed in Angry Birds on his smartphone to see me coming. Clearly, it’s morons like him who mobile phone company Docomo is looking to get through to with their unique new stairway ad which can be found at JR Shinjuku Station.
In an effort to catch as many small patches of smartphone users’ field of vision as possible, they completely covered the stair case in a screamingly loud yellow. They also printed a brief but effective message in enormous print which anyone should be able to catch in between Twitter updates.
Despite this, the ad makers are well are of yellow paint’s limitations, and say so in the fine print.
The walls of the stairway are also emblazoned with admonishing messages for smartphone usage on the move.
It certainly seems like a bold move for a mobile phone company to critique the way their customers use their product so strongly. However, internet reaction to the ad has been largely positive with comments such as “Good ad!” and “They should put that in more stations!”
Others pointed out that the advert was unfairly going after smartphone users while people with flip-top or “Galapagos” phones are equal if not worse offenders. Personally I don’t see the problem with either of them. It’s like people never heard of multitasking before! Heck, I rote this tire arcticle wile you sing my martphone.
