Japanese Chocolaty Frozen Snack Commercials Disturbing Yet Oddly Comforting

Earlier this month a series of commercials were released by Akagi Dairy, the makers of the popular Gari Gari Kun frozen ice pops. These spots were to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the company’s Black line of chocolate ice bars.

It’s probably hard to tell from the image above but the commercials were put together by a team of talented and experienced Japanese artists. The result is, well, definitely something.

The series is a set of three animations: Not Edit; Gari Gari Kun’s Company Edit; and Sales Edit. Here they are with translated lyrics.

Ridiculous isn’t it?

The artwork was done by award winning manga artist Kotobuki Shirigari, and the choreography by Lucky Ikeda who has an impressively long resume including teaching Arnold Schwarzenegger to dance with kettles in a Cup Noodle commercial back in ’89.

These two have collaborated earlier on a series of “Sorting Songs” teaching various things like the nations of Africa and prefixes for orders of magnitudes.

For the Black commercials the music was done by Yosuke Kakegawa and Tsuneki Motozawa calling themselves Tomishiro.

The ads have been well received by Japanese viewers with chuckles of “What the hell is that?” In China, meanwhile, they caused a sensation over microblogging sites with some deriding them as “perverted” and “boring” while the majority thought they were “unique and interesting.”

Fittingly, Sales Edit has racked up the most YouTube hits with nearly 600,000 views while the other two videos are lingering at around 150,000 views each. I have to assume it’s the pants dropping that did it.

Personally, there is something quite unsettling about the characters slowly writhing around to droning music, and yet I find myself strangely relaxed while watching them.

Hmm. I could really go for a chocolate popsicle right about now.
